Summary | 0004004: From some versiof of FAR all dialogs does not contain size of objects in bytes, only in KB/MB/GB/TB - worse than Explorer
Description | From some version of FAR interface of dialogs (info panels, etc) is totally changed and all information about files, space, folders, any objects that have a "size" properties, now shown only in KB/MB/GB/TB, and there is no possibility to know the full and exact size in bytes. For example, QuickView panel: ======================================= Folder "X:\DATA" Folders: 124 Files: 743 Files size: 165 GB Allocated size: 165 GB (100%) Cluster size: 4 096 Files slack: 688 KB (0%) MFT overhead: 1,26 KB (0%) ======================================= I want to see exact size in bytes, for example: Files size: 165 GB (177 167 400 960 bytes) Even Windows Explorer allow to see exact size in bytes! FAR now is not show this information and you are UNABLE to get it in any way! It seems like a FAR user now a worse than a Windows Explorer user. Like absolutely non-technician guy. (More improvements it is a like "Folders: About ~100, Files: About ~750" The same thing with the free space on disk and memory: [-]─────────────────── Fixed disk X:\ (NTFS) ─────────────────────── Space, total 4,00 GB Space, available 0%, 12,5 MB Volume label DATAVOLD2 Serial number 1234-5678 [-]─────────────────────────── Memory ────────────────────────────── Committable, total 82,4 GB Committable, available 56%, 46,4 GB Addressable, total 128 TB Addressable, available 99%, 128 TB Physical, total 63,9 GB Physical, available 2%, 1,71 GB Physical, installed 64,0 GB [-]──────────────────────── Description ──────────────────────────── I can't now understand what real size of disk in bytes, how many bytes are really available. (In some cases I need to know this byte-to-byte, when creating some vdisks). So now I need to use... Windows Explorer! To check free space and check allocated space! Who had made this interface "blonde"-"optimization"? Even Windows Explorer shows more information! This is unusable now :( Maybe is it possible to make some option in Interface settings or somewhere like: [x] Show sizes in bytes too and if you are checking it, you'll have something like: Space, total 4,00 GB (4 xxx xxx xxx bytes) Space, available 0%, 12,5 MB (12 xxx xxx bytes) and so on. The same in the main panel, when selecting: ║ │ ║ ╟─────────── Bytes: 176 750 028 393, files: 0, folders: 1 ────┴──────╢ ║XXXXXXXXX 165 G 03.09.19 13:21║ ╚═══════════════════════ 0 B (1/10) ═══ 137 G ═══════════════════════╝ 165 G, 137 G -- non informative in some cases. (I found only one location, where "optimization" was not made and behavior was not changed (very good) - it is a calculated size of selected folders/files. Here you see a correct information in bytes!). [176 750 028 393]

Short and to the point - talent! Thank you very much! It is really what I need! Is this information available somewhere in the help or anywhere? |
You can press F1 when Info panel is active. |
I had found one location, where behavior is not changed. Steps to reproduce: 1) Set Panel to "Wide" 2) Select a few folders 3) Press F3 to calculate size Current behavior: You'll get a size in MB/GB/TB in any modes of Ctrl+Shift+S (this will not affect the size column) Expected behavior: Get size in bytes Sample: │ Size ║ │ Up ║ │ 995 M║ │ 27 G║ │1580 M║ │ 50 G║ │ 27 G║ │ 12 G║ │ 100 M║ │ 29 G║ │ 18 G║ │ 254 M║ │ 26 G║ │ 50 G║ │ 17 G║ │ 15 G║ │ 139 G║ │ 29 G║ │1105 M║ │ 162 M║ |
How sizes are displayed in columns and status line of file panels is determined by File Panel Mode settings. And that dialog has its Help too. |
Maybe column width is not enough to show size in bytes. |
Another one window, where Ctrl+Shift+S does not change anything - changing drive (Alt+F1/F2): ╔═══════════ Change drive ═══════════╗ ║ B: disconnected │ │ ║ ║ C: fixed │ 238 G │ 96,8 G ║ ║ D: fixed │ 300 G │ 233 M ║ ║ E: fixed │ 300 G │ 254 M ║ ║ F: fixed │ 232 G │ 1,25 G ║ ║ G: fixed │ 99,5 G │ 121 M ║ ║ H: fixed │ 1024 G │ 1024 G ║ ║ I: fixed │ 4,37 G │ 349 M ║ ║ J: fixed │ 4,37 G │ 203 M ║ ║ K: fixed │ 4,36 G │ 79,4 M ║ ... |
And never did (including far1). And shouldn't (I think). |
I had checked - in any type of Panel Mode (where calculation is available - Full, Wide, Detailed, Long Descriptions, File Owners, File Links, Alternative Full) it show non-bytes sizes. |
Maybe. But it is unusable to compare folders in two panels. |
You can change any column width. |
But it is not subject for Ctrl+Shift+S If width is big enough size will be displayed in bytes without group separator. I am not sure if exists column type to display group separator... |
I think that Ctrl+Shift+S must change all size-counters in all locations (because it is easy to switch back in any moment - just pressing the same combination). So, panels/windows may use two designs for columns: "small" for KB/MB/GB/TB-sizes and "bigger" for bytes-sizes. As I found currently there are only two locations where sizes are not "converted" visually - select drive panel and some of Panel Modes - and I think these columns may be a little wider for bytes. For example, "~143M" (5 chars) "123123123123123" (15 chars as maximum value; or may be smaller amount of chars [12-13] + key-combination like Alt+< and Alt+> to shift view of values in columns on any panel/window) |
Clearly, you did not read Help on customizing Panel Modes. Please do read it prior to any further discussion of these. |
I understand about customization. But this discussion is not about customization, it is about a default behavior with one of the modes of Ctrl+Shift+S (as it written in Help, BTW). Just some ideas that it is not fully matches idea of the switching between bytes/other values. |
But this discussion is not about customization, it is about a default behavior with one of the modes of Ctrl+Shift+S I believe it is about Who had made this interface "blonde"-"optimization"? Even Windows Explorer shows more information! This is unusable now :(, according to the description of the issue. As we found out, it is not the case, there is no need to panic, the product is still usable and it is definitely not a bug. If you have other ideas about extending Ctrl+Shift+S behavior, feel free to open a new issue in the Wishes section. This one has too much unrelated information already. |
